Traditional matcha tea ceremony with bamboo whisk and ceramic bowl

The traditional Japanese tea ceremony, known as "chanoyu" or "sado," is a meditative practice that transforms the simple act of preparing and drinking tea into a spiritual experience. This authentic method of preparing matcha has been practiced for over 400 years and emphasizes mindfulness, respect, and the appreciation of simple beauty.

Traditional Equipment

Essential Tools

  • Chasen: Bamboo whisk for mixing matcha
  • Chawan: Traditional tea bowl
  • Chashaku: Bamboo tea scoop
  • Furui: Fine mesh sifter

Ingredients

  • 2g (2 chashaku scoops) ceremonial grade matcha
  • 60ml hot water (70-80°C / 158-176°F)
  • Optional: traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi)

Traditional Preparation Steps

1

Prepare Your Mind and Space

Begin by creating a calm, clean environment. Take a moment to center yourself and approach the preparation with mindfulness and respect. This mental preparation is as important as the physical steps.

Philosophy: The tea ceremony embodies four principles: harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.

2

Warm the Chawan

Pour hot water into the chawan to warm it. Swirl the water gently, then discard. This step ensures the tea will maintain its proper temperature and shows respect for the tools.

3

Sift and Measure the Matcha

Using the furui, sift the matcha powder to remove any clumps. Use the chashaku to measure approximately 2 scoops (2g) of matcha into the warmed chawan.

Technique: Hold the chashaku with three fingers and scoop with gentle, deliberate movements.

4

Add Water and Begin Whisking

Add a small amount of hot water (about 1/3 of the total) to the matcha. Using the chasen, whisk in slow, deliberate motions to create a smooth paste without lumps.

5

Complete the Whisking

Add the remaining hot water and whisk vigorously in an M-shaped or W-shaped motion. Continue for about 15-20 seconds until the tea becomes frothy and well-integrated.

Perfect Foam: The ideal matcha should have a fine, creamy foam on top.

6

Serve and Enjoy Mindfully

Present the chawan with both hands, turning it so the front faces away from you. Drink in three sips, appreciating the color, aroma, and taste. Express gratitude for the experience.
